Staff Spotlight: Birgitte “BG” Golden

When you meet Birgitte Golden, or simply “BG” as most know her, you can instantly feel her warmth and genuine care for others. As the Program Director for Na Keiki O Emalia, BG leads one of the most heartfelt initiatives within Imua Family Services—helping children, teens, and families navigate life after loss.

Since 2019, BG has been a steady light for grieving families on Maui. When Na Keiki O Emalia officially joined Imua Family Services in July 2024, BG continued her leadership with grace, compassion, and an unshakable belief in the healing power of community. Her work is far-reaching—coordinating grief support groups in schools and the community, mentoring volunteer facilitators, and creating educational opportunities that raise awareness about childhood bereavement. “It’s an honor to lead this program and see the impact grief support can have in shaping children’s futures,” BG says. “It’s incredibly meaningful to witness children find connection, healing, and hope.”

BG grew up surrounded by the values of aloha and kuleana (responsibility). “There’s something truly profound about growing up in Hawaii,” she reflects. “It teaches you to live with empathy, respect, and a connection to others and the land.”

Her dedication to service is no coincidence, it’s in her roots. Coming from a family with a long tradition of community involvement, BG has spent over 20 years working for Maui nonprofits, uplifting others through programs that make a lasting difference.

Education played an important part in shaping her path. After attending Haleakala Waldorf School and Seabury Hall, BG earned her B.A. in Liberal Studies with a Minor in Spanish from Oregon State University. But more than degrees, it was life experience that truly guided her career choice. Having faced loss herself, BG understands firsthand how deeply grief can shape a person’s life— and how vital it is for children to have safe, supportive spaces to process it. “I’m passionate about supporting children in learning healthy ways to grieve and cope,” she shares.

At home, BG’s world is full of love and laughter. She lives with her husband, their three teenage children, and her parents— all under one roof. “Family means everything to me,” she says. “Being raised in a family that values kindness and service continues to influence how I try to live each day.”

When she’s not working, you’ll likely find BG singing, dancing, writing, or spending time with her favorite people. Music is one of her greatest joys— “it connects people and changes moods,” she says—and she dreams of sharing her writing more widely one day. Her happy places? Hana and Makena, where nature, family, and reflection meet.

With her heart-forward leadership and lifelong dedication to helping others, BG embodies the spirit of Imua— moving forward with compassion, courage, and community.
