Something Powerful Is Happening — And It’s Being Led By Maui’s Youth

YouthLine Hawaii is officially recruiting for its second Maui volunteer cohort, and if you are (or know) a young person between the ages of 15 and 24, this is your invitation to step into leadership, connection, and real impact.

What is YouthLine?

YouthLine is a peer-to-peer help, support, and crisis line for teens and young adults nationwide. Young people reach out by call, text, or chat — and on the other end is another trained young person who understands what it’s like to navigate school stress, family challenges, relationships, mental health struggles, and sometimes even thoughts of suicide.

Each year, YouthLine responds to more than 25,000 contacts. The need is real. The impact is real. And now Maui youth are helping lead the way.

Our first Maui cohort launched with a goal of 4–5 volunteers. The community showed up in a big way — 12 students representing four Maui high schools stepped forward. Today, those volunteers are taking live contacts two nights a week, offering compassionate, relatable support to youth across the country.

Now, we’re ready to grow.

Comprehensive Training

YouthLine Hawaii will host its second volunteer cohort training this March over spring break.

With 65-hour training this experience is designed to equip volunteers with:

  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills
  • Active listening and communication tools
  • Mental health education and awareness
  • Direct service experience in a supervised, supportive environment

Volunteers also participate in outreach and advocacy work, helping champion youth mental health here on Maui.

It’s hands-on. It’s meaningful. And yes — it looks incredible on college, scholarship, and job applications (hello, Epic Senior Project). A work-study stipend is also available for eligible volunteers.

First Step: Attend an Info Session

Before training begins, all interested youth must:

  1. Register and attend an Orientation (Info Session)
    Upcoming dates:
  2. Complete the volunteer application
  3. Participate in an interview with the YouthLine Youth Development Team

All steps must be completed no later than March 11 to be considered for the March cohort.

Orientation registration is required in advance through the YouthLine Hawaii registration form.

Why This Matters

Young people often want to talk to someone who gets it. Someone close to their age. Someone who understands the pressure, the uncertainty, the isolation — and the hope.

YouthLine creates that space.

This is more than volunteering. It’s becoming part of a statewide movement that empowers youth to support youth. It’s building leadership skills, confidence, empathy, and resilience. It’s stepping up for your community in a way that truly matters.

If you are 15–24 and ready to make a difference — or if you’re a parent, teacher, or community member who knows someone who would be a great fit — now is the time to share the opportunity.
